A block-based coding platform that teaches Python logic before syntax, in the student's own language. Built end to end by me in the summer of 2024.
Almost every popular programming language uses English keywords. For a beginner who doesn't speak English, that means learning two new languages at once: English and code. Students who are good at logic can get stuck on words they don't know.
Omni lets beginners snap together blocks written in their own language. Underneath, every program is still real Python, so the jump to typed code later is small.
Pick a language. The blocks a student sees change, but the Python that runs stays exactly the same.
Shown here with a greeting in each language. In Omni itself, every block label and keyword is translated too.
The key design decision was to never translate the code itself. Translation only happens in the interface. That keeps every program valid Python, no matter which of the 133+ languages a student picks.
Tkinter UI with blocks for math symbols, operators and string manipulation.
Every block label and keyword goes through the Google Translate API on the front end.
The backend maps each block back to its original English Python.
The program runs as normal Python, so skills carry over later.
I'm looking for software engineering internships for Summer 2027, and I'm always happy to talk about projects.
